Lady Knights Fall to Defending State Champs SW Guilford 61-41 in State Playoffs

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights fell to the 2011 4A State Champion SW Guilford Cowboys (Cowgirls?) tonight in High Point 61-41 in 2nd round 2012 state playoff action.  North played SWG hard, and stayed within 13-16 points the entire game until the very end, but just could not pull off the upset.

SWG must have done some scouting on our team, as they denied the ball going inside, which had been working well the last few games.  North had trouble shooting those outside shots, and SWG could not miss.  Senior Samantha Honeycutt led the scoring for North with 15 points.  Only 4 North players scored, which is an indication of our shooting woes..  North played them even in the 2nd half, but the 19 point deficit built in the 2nd quarter was just too much to overcome.

Of course, the strong defense of SWG had a lot to do with our misses, and with turnovers as well.  Don't be surprised to see them repeat as state champs in a few weeks.

Scoring totals:

Samantha Honeycutt-15

Sydney Bryan-12

Ivy Kiker-10

Kelcey Lowrey-4

North finished at 9-16, and played hard in every game this season.

Editors Note:

Lady Knights win NCHSAA 4A State Playoffs 1st Round Game

By: Mike Darrow

The #11 Seed North Davidson Lady Knights defeated the #6 Seed Richmond County Lady Raiders tonight in Rockingham in State Playoff 1st Round action 54-43.  North jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead on the strength of Sydney Bryan's 9 points in the paint, including 7 of 8 on the charity stripe.  The Lady Knights held on to a 28-25 lead at the half, and fought back from a 1-point deficit in the middle of the 3rd to lead 42-33.  North used a full court press at times to confuse the Raiders and force several turnovers and easy layups.

The inside game was working well, with the guards feeding the post players.  Taylor Darrow led all scorers with 14, but Bryan's 11 and Ivy Kiker's 12 led a balanced attack.  Amanda Davis came in off the bench to sub for Bryan who had a little bit of foul trouble and more than held her own - good defense and a season-high 6 points.

Lady Knights Fall to West Forsyth 53-24

By: Mike Darrow

The Lady Knights lost their semifinal game to West Forsyth Thursday at Reagan in CPC Tournament play.  North fell behind 13-4 in the first quarter, and could never recover.  The Lady Knights could not solve the matchup problems that the Titans' tall and lanky forwards presented.

Along with, (or because of), the match up problems, the Lady Knights had trouble finding the basket.  They also fell back a little into not seeing the open player quickly enough...but the Titans defense had a lot to do with that as well.  They are a strong team.

Of course, in what is now typical of West Forsyth, the starters were in and firing up 3's at the end of the game with a 30-point lead.  Sad that their coach thinks a 30-point lead is a better win than a 2-point lead, or that a huge lead somehow makes them look better.  Oh well, when you are not used to winning you don't know how to win gracefully...

Leading scorers were Sydney Bryan and Taylor Darrow with 7 each.

Lady Knights March on in CPC Tournament

By: Mike Darrow

The Lady Knights defeated Davie in 1st round action tonight in the Central Piedmont Conference Tournament at Reagan. The Knights, the #3 seed, won 55-39 going away. The Lady Knights took the lead very early in the 1st quarter and never looked back. North played very strong defense on Davie's 2 key scorers, and held them at bay until the end of the game when the final result was inevitable. Alayasia Lindsay in particular played very smart, crisp defense, but all the girls looked sharp.

Taylor Darrow for the second game in a row had her offense going, with a game-high 14 points, including 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. Ali Lanier decided she wanted to keep her senior season going, scoring a season-high 12 points, 9 in the 4th quarter as the Knights pulled away, part of a 19-point explosion in that quarter.

Knights Down War Eagles, Secure 3rd in CPC, and Lock Spot in States

By: Jim Skotthy

The Lady Knights traveled across the river last night in search of a win against the Davie War Eagles and walked away with a hard earned 45-41 win. There was a lot at stake….final seeding in the CPC and a guaranteed spot in the State Playoffs. Not just a game, but a mission. With Catie Hyatt and Myeshia Liles both unable to play due to injury, the Knights were short on the bench, but they stepped up!

The Knights came out of the gate a little tentative, Davie was in control for most of the first quarter, but at the horn to finish the first, Taylor Darrow hit a three pointer to finish the quarter, it was just the beginning of Darrow’s evening! At the end of the first Davie led 11-8 and the entire game was going to be close.

In the second quarter, our ladies settled down and began to take control of the game. Behind Ivy Kiker’s 5 points, Sydney Bryan’s 3 and Taylor Darrow’s 3 the half was 19-16 in favor of the Knights.

In the second half, it was a battle. North led the entire way, but could not find a way to put away the War Eagles. Sometimes when you are watching a battle, you can see who is going to step up, and there was a look on Taylor Darrow’s face all night. You could almost tell she knew she had to bring her game to a higher level and she did. You could see the determination on her face, almost a look that said there is no way I’m going to let us lose this game. She poured in 8 points in the third and at the end of the quarter it was the Lady Knights 33, Davie 28. Ivy Kiker also had a look in her eye, and had 10 points on the night and it was needed because in the fourth quarter, Davie threw everything they had at the Knights, outscoring them 13-12 in the stanza.

In the end, Davie had to resort to fouling, but the Knights were smart to get the ball to the hot hand, Taylor Darrow. She dropped all four of her free throws in the fourth, and helped secure the win. Darrow had 20 points on the night, and you could just tell that she wanted to make sure the Knights locked up 3rd place in the CPC and made sure that a spot in the state playoffs was secured! Congratulations to the Lady Knights for a great season, and good luck in the CPC tournament, and the state playoffs.

The Lady Knights will be in action as the third seed in the CPC playoffs this coming Tuesday. Reagan High School is the host this year, and the Knights will be taking on Davie once again not a gimme by any means. Game time should be 7:30 on Tuesday. Make sure you head out in force to support our Black Knights!

Lady Knights Fall to Spartans 54-40

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights fell to the undefeated Mount Tabor Lady Spartans 54-40 last night in Pete Jones gym at NDHS.  North fell behind 16-7 after 1 quarter, could never get much closer than that.  Tabor did not play their best game, but unfortunately neither did North, many uncontested turnovers due to traveling and errant passes.  Free throw shooting was also an issue - 3 for 10.

Samantha Honeycutt had a strong offensive game on Senior Night, scoring a team-high 17 points.

Scoring totals:

North is now 3-6 in conference play.  The Lady Knights will finish either 3rd or 4th with a win at Davie Friday, depending on what the outcome of the Reynolds/Reagan game is.  Most likely, a conference tournament game next Monday is in the cards for the girls.

Lady Knights Overwhelmed by Titans 61-30

By: Mike Darrow

The Lady Knights lost to the West Forsyth Titans Friday in Clemmons 61-30.  North started out strong defensively, and were tied 10-10 after 1 quarter.  Alas, West outscored North 19-5 in the second quarter, 19-10 in the third and 13-5 in the fourth.  In fact, West had their starters in throughout most of the game and were even taking 3-pointers and running fast breaks late in the 4th quarter. When you are not used to winning, I guess you haven't learned to win with class.  Luckily, that behavior usually comes back to bite you - hopefully

Anyways, the Lady Knights struggled with turnovers, and had trouble finding the open player - a problem we have talked about before.  The Titans also had height advantages that they used to out-rebound North.  The Lady Knights did a good job breaking the full court press, but would then turnover the ball or force up an ill-advised shot. The ladies return to the court on Tuesday night against Mt. Tabor at home. It's senior night, so please come out early and recognize our Senior Lady Knights!

Lady Knights Defeat Reynolds 45-43

By: Mike Darrow

Blame it on the pink ball, I say...

The Lady Knights had trouble shooting free throws in the second half on Play for Kay Night Tuesday in Welcome, as that pink ball seemed to have a mind of its own.  However, the Lady Knights defeated Reynolds tonight at Pete Jones Gym 45-43 in a thrilling finish for both teams.  North led throughout the game, maintaining a 4-6 point lead, and as high as 10, until the very end of the game...blame it on the pink ball.

North missed 6 free throws late in the game (darn pink ball), which allowed Reynolds to try to tie or either win the game with 9 seconds left.  North played strong defense, but fouled Reynolds with 0.7 seconds left and clinging to a 2-point lead.  Reynolds missed both free throws (love that pink ball), Sydney Bryan cradled the rebound and North escaped with the win and third place in the CPC.

Our 'bigs', Catie Hyatt and Sydney Bryan, had good games and scored half of our points.  Sam Honeycutt and Taylor Darrow also chipped in 8 and 6 points respectively in strong games for both.

Scoring totals:

Lady Knights Fall to Reagan 58-43

By: Mike Darrow

Back when I was in college, back in the day (when 8 tracks had just given way to cassette tapes) one of my favorite bands was Foreigner.  They had a song called "Cold as Ice"...and I found myself humming that song throughout the first half of the Lady Knights' game tonight at Reagan.  North just could not find the basket, and the more we missed, the more we forced shots, and more we missed, and the more we forced shots, etc. The girls also had trouble seeing the open player, which resulted in forced shots and...you get the picture.

Only scoring 14 points, to Reagan's 30, in the first half dug the girls a big hole...

Coach Puckett must have made a strong halftime speech, because North played Reagan even in the 2nd half, and scored 29 points versus the Lady Raiders' 28.  Shot selection improved, shooting percentage improved.  Alas, that 16-point deficit was just too much to overcome and North took the loss.  The Lady Knights did shot 9 of 13 from the charity stripe, which is quite the improvement from previous games.

The Lady Knights pulled within 10 a couple of times, but could not get any closer.  The hustle was there especially in the 2nd half, but it was just too much to overcome.

The Lady Knights fall to 2-4 in CPC play, and host Reynolds next Tuesday in the friendly confines of Pete Jones Gym.  Someone turn the heat up in there, please, and unthaw those rims!

While still not totally over their shooting woes, the Lady Knights shot better than previous games.  Ivy Kiker led the scoring with 14 points, with ten of those coming in the 2nd quarter.  North had very balanced scoring, with 10 girls scoring.

North Girls Fall to Spartans 63-41

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights fell to the Mount Tabor Spartans 63-41 in Winston-Salem Friday night.  The Lady Knights once again struggled to score points, and against a high-scoring team like Tabor, that will (and did) prove to be fatal.  More than a few shots were in and out, and sometimes the girls would settle for any shot rather than the right shot by the open player.

North played overall a good game, with some good defense against what is basically an 'all-star' team, with the open enrollment policy in Forsyth County.  But again, a low shooting percentage led to defeat.  The Lady Knights were down 16-9 after one, and the Lady Spartans really pulled away at the start of the third quarter, and led by 25 after 3. Ivy Kiker led all scorers with 9 points.

Scoring

Ivy Kiker - 9

Lady Knights Undefeated in 2012: 41-36 Win Over Lady Spartans

By: Mike Darrow

Welcome 2012! The Lady Knights have a 2-game win streak with their 41-36 win over the Central Davidson Lady Spartans in Southwood last night, avenging a loss to them in the Christmas Tournament.  Trailing by 3 after the 1st, 6 at the half and 4 after 3, the Lady Knights finally took the lead in the 4th quarter and pulled away for the victory.

North scored 18 points in the 4th quarter to Central's 9 to gain the win. Sydney Bryan led all scorers with 11:

Lady Knights Win CPC Opener, Down RJR 40-34

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights defeated the Reynolds Lady Demons on their home court tonight in Winston-Salem in the Central Piedmont Conference opener for both teams.  Led by the hot shooting of Samantha Honeycutt, and some tenacious defense, the Lady Knights overcame a one-point deficit after three quarters for the win. Samantha Honeycutt scored 16 points in the victory.

Other scorers:

Catie Hyatt - 2

Sydney Bryan - 8

Alayasia Lindsay - 4

Myeshia Liles - 2

Alyssa Myrick - 3

Kelcey Lowrey – 4

Ivy Kiker-1

The game started slowly offensively for both teams, with the score 6-4 North after 1 quarter.  The Lady Demons were very physical, too much so for the ref's liking as they quickly got into some foul trouble.  Reynolds came out strong in the 2nd and took a 4 point lead 14-18 at the half.

With the 1-point difference to start the 4th, the Lady Knights defense went to work, allowing only 4 points for the Demons, while scoring 11, seven of them by Honeycutt.  Kelsey Lowrey hit one of her 2 shots in the 4th at a critical point in the game in add to the cause.

The Lady Knights are now 1-0 in conference play, in first place(!), and play at Central Davidson Wednesday followed by their first conference home game Friday versus Reagan.

Lady Knights Lose to Lady Spartans 48-35

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights fell to the Central Davidson Lady Spartans at Ledford in the NewBridge Christmas Tournament consolation game.  The Lady Knights kept the game very close, only trailing by 3 after 3 quarters, but a 5-point 4th quarter (with Central scoring 16) doomed the Lady Knights to defeat.

The Lady Knights came out looking strong, and trailed by only 1 at the half, 22-23.  Taylor Darrow had all her 8 points in the first half, with Sydney Bryan chipping in 5, all on free throws, at the break.  The Lady Knights then had trouble finding Darrow in the 2nd half, and fell into turnovers and some weak shot selection in the 4th.  Samantha Honeycutt had 7 points, coming after the previous game where she had great looks and strong shots that just would not find the net.  Katie Hyatt also had 7, as did Bryan, and Darrow had the team-high 8 points.

Overall, North played a stronger game than the previous loss; the girls just need to learn how to finish strong.

Scoring totals:

Darrow - 8

Hyatt - 7

Bryan - 7

Honeycutt - 7

Lanier - 2

Liles - 2

Lindsay - 2

The Lady Knights open conference play on the road Tuesday, January 3rd at Reynolds, and on Wednesday, the take on the Lady Spartans again at Central, before returning home on Friday against Reagan. Come out and support the Lady Knights!

Lady Knights Fall in 1st Round of New Bridge Classic To East Davidson 53-31

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights fell again to East Davidson in the first round of the Newbridge Christmas Classic in Ledford today.  The Lady Knights had already lost twice to the Lady Eagles, the most recent being their previous game.  Once again poor shooting plaqued North, along with some issues with ball control.

The Lady Eagles led 13-8 after one and 23-17 at the half, but broke open the game in the 3rd and 4th quarter, leading 36-24 after 3 and by 22 for the final tally.  The Lady Knights were within 6 several times in the game, but almost every time a couple of turnovers would push the lead back to 10 or 12.

The scoring totals:

Katie Hyatt - 8

Taylor Darrow - 6

Sydney Bryan - 6

Samantha Honeycutt - 4

Myeshia Liles - 3

Alayasia Lindsay - 2

Ivy Kiker - 2

The Lady Knights play Central Davidson in a consolation game Wednesday at 2:30 at Ledford.

Lady Knights Downed by Eagles 58-42

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights fell to the East Davidson Eagles last night in Thomasville 58-42.  Shooting woes continued, including going only 5 for 14 from the free throw line.  The Lady Knights had a 7-2 lead early, and things looked good, but then the Eagles attacked the basket and drew fouls time and again, and led 10-9 after one.  East led 29-19 at the half and 44-28 after three.

Taylor Darrow led all scorers with 11, and in balanced scoring 4 others had 8 - 10 points.  Darrow also led the team in rebounds.

The Black Knights next game is Tuesday December 27th in the NewBridge Christmas Tournament at Southeast Guilford High School. Game time is 5:30pm. The Ladies once again take on East Davidson, with hopes that the third time will be the charm! Shooting Woes Doom Lady Knights VS Lady Dogs 42-34

By: Mike Darrow

Hitting 14 of 46 shots, and 0 for 6 from beyond the three-point arc, the North Davidson Lady Knights fell to the Thomasville Lady Bulldogs 42-34 tonight in Thomasville. A low-scoring game overall, the Lady Knights still had their chances in the game, and did their usual late-game surge to pull within 5 points in the 4th quarter.  However, missed shots at the end sealed their fate.

North played very strong defense, and had a strong passing game.  Many of the missed shots were at point-blank range, right under the basket, as if the rim had a lid on it.  The score was only 8-4 Dogs after one, and 24-18 Thomasville after three.  The Lady Knights did their scoring in the 4th quarter, as they have in previous games, scoring 16 points.  Unfortunately, the Lady Dogs scored 18 to get to the final 8 point margin of victory.

Katie Hyatt led North's scoring with 12 points.  Sydney Bryan had 10 rebounds, and Taylor Darrow 8, and Bryan also had 7 assists.

The Lady Knights next play at East Davidson on Tuesday Dec 20th.

Lady Knights Drop to 2-5

By: Jim Skotthy

The Lady Knights met up last night with the Blue Comets of Asheboro, and came up short 57-50. This is a team that the Knights could have defeated, if not for the mental mistakes. The Knight defense is still letting too many baskets inside, and for some reason, in the last few games, the offense has dried up.

In the first quarter, Senior Myeshia Liles got the Knights on the board first. Asheboro quickly answered, until Liles again scored. At the 4:06 mark in the first, the Blue Comets led 6-5. The rest of the quarter became a defensive struggle with Asheboro taking a slight lead. Only 28.5 seconds remained when Ali Lanier tied the game at ten. On the next possession, Alyssa Myrick fouled, and Asheboro hit both shots to go up 12-10. With 3.9 seconds to go, and the score the same, North got the inbound ball, and 3 passes later, it got to Ivy Kiker, who made a valiant try at a three, but it was no good. 12-10 Asheboro to finish the quarter.

Taylor Darrow tied the game up for the Knights about a minute into the second quarter to make the score 12 all. 5:25 on the clock, and Liles connected on a three to give the Knights the lead at 15-14, but within the space of one minute, Asheboro got four straight points to retake the lead, 18-15. The Knights got sloppy after that, and with 2:17 to go, Asheboro had a 25-17 lead. Sydney Bryan and Catie Hyatt both connected to make the half score 27-21.

In the third, Asheboro went on a 4-0 run to take a ten point lead. Myeshia Liles stole the ball with 6:28 to go and led a fast break, passing to Bryan who connected. It was 31-23.

Samantha Honeycutt got a three pointer with 4:38 to go, to make the score 35-26. North had a lot of trouble getting rebounds in the game, and especially in the third quarter. Taylor Darrow scored with 3:42 left and it was 35-28. North went into a mind meld, letting Asheboro score four straight points, and with 2:28 it was 39-28. Asheboro was able to get a lot of their points by penetrating the inside lane, and North didn’t seem to have an answer on how to stop it. Kelcey Lowery connected on a three pointer with about 30 seconds remaining, to make the 3rd period score 44-32 in favor of the Blue Comets.

With the fourth quarter underway, Liles was fouled with 6:24 to go in the game. She hit both her shots to bring the score to 46-34. Asheboro’s point guard, Abagail Bullins was a thorn in the side of the Knights all evening, hitting her shots, and causing havoc, but on this possession, the Lady Knights did an excellent job of defense, trapping her. The ball was ruled Knight possession, and she didn’t like it at all. A Technical was called on her, and Liles hit one of the two “T” shots, it was 46-35 and the Knights still had the ball. Lanier hit a three with 5:32 to go to make it 46-38, and Asheboro took a time out. Sydney Bryan got the Knights to within seven, 47-40 at the 3:24 mark, but Asheboro was just a little too good on this night, winning 57-50.

The Ladies return to action on Friday, as they travel to Thomasville to take on the Bulldogs. Game time is 6pm, followed by the men. Make the short trip to support your Lady Knights!

Ledford Rains 3’s on Knight Parade

By: Jim Skotthy

It was an ugly game, no two ways about it. The Lady Knights lost 65-54, and although the Knights lost by 11, they were lucky to do so.

In the first quarter, Ledford took an immediate lead 2-0, and they would never look back.

At the 6:30 mark in the first, Alayasia Lindsay was fouled and made one of her two free throws. Very poor passing, and numerous turnovers by the Knights made the first quarter score 12-1 in favor of the Panthers. The ladies seemed to be playing with zero confidence, and not sure what to do on the floor. The second quarter got even worse. 3:37 was left in the first half, and the score was 27-1, yes…27-1. Catie Hyatt finally got the Knights some points with 3:24 left. She was fouled less than ten seconds later, and the score was 27-5. With 2:50 left in the half, Taylor Darrow connected, quickly followed by another basket by Hyatt. With 2:15 left, it was 27-9. North would not score again in the quarter and at the half, it was an unbelievable score..34-9.

In the third quarter, Sydney Bryan was fouled with 7:23 to go and made both shots to make the score 34-11. Didn’t matter to Ledford, as they continued to hit 3 point shots. They did that all night long, and the Knights had no answer for it. With 3:37 remaining in the third Taylor Darrow was fouled and hit one of two shots, to bring the Knights to within twenty points..40-20. The end of the third quarter score was 46-28, Ledford.

The fourth quarter was a little different story, it seemed that the Lady Knights came to life, however it was too little, too late. Ivy Kiker made a shot with 5:57 to go to bring the score to 52-30. Myeshia Liles came on strong and was on the free throw line numerous times. At the 2:24 mark, she made both free throws and the score was 61-47, Ledford. Sydney Bryan connected on a shot with 2:12 to go to make it 61-49. Three consecutive Ledford turnovers followed, and with 55 seconds remaining, Samantha Honeycutt hit a three pointer. It was within 10, 62-52. The end result was much more respectable than the beginning, the Lady Knights lost 65-54.

This is a talented team, and one could say that tonight was just a bump in the road, but with the recent play of the team, it’s becoming obvious that someone has to take charge on the court. Too many miscues have plagued the team in recent games and that must be corrected. Sydney Bryan led the team in points tonight with 15, followed by Myeshia Liles with 14. The Lady Knights return to the court on Tuesday of next week when they take on Asheboro in Welcome. Game time is 6pm. Come out and support the Lady Black Knights!

Lady Knights Lose 50-36

 By: Jim Skotthy

The score looks worse that it really was. The Lady Knights went to Page High on Tuesday, and lost 50-36. Fourteen points, however it seems the ladies were infected by the same virus that hit the men last Friday night…whistleitis. It’s a rare disease, only hits during the winter season, much like the flu, and it seems the men passed it on to the ladies on this night, but it wasn’t all the fault of the whistles.

Turnovers by the Knights did not help the cause, we had 32 on the night. As with the men, Page is a very athletic team, and will probe until they find a weakness, and then pounce..and pounce they did by going through the passing lanes and stealing the ball.

In the first quarter, the Lady Knights were only down by 2, 8-6. The half score ended up 25-17. Still respectable since the whistles were being blown all night. Seems that our defense was not to a liking of the grey shirts, the Black Knights were hit with 9 fouls in the first half, compared to 5 for Page. Still..not bad…but it got worse.

In the third quarter, the Ladies kept it close, being outscored 12-10, making the score   37-27.

The fourth quarter was the big difference, North only getting 9 points compared to Page’s 13. Keep in mind the foul thing…Page had 5 in the first half, and 5 in the second half, the Black Knights had 11. hmmm….Bottom line was that the Knights were 5 of 9 from the line, while Page was 19 for 29. A little discrepancy there…but I figure it’s because our Lady Knights were aggressive and would take no prisoners! If you read through, you will see there was a 14 point difference..where did it come from? The free throw line, and that was the difference in the game.

The good thing was that Sydney Bryan had 8 rebounds, 7 of which were offensive. You cannot win unless you crash the offensive board, and Sydney did a commendable job of it! Alayasia Lindsay also had 5 defensive boards, again, you can’t win unless you take control of the opponents misses, and Lindsay did just that.

The girls are still getting used to the style of varsity play, which is much quicker, and when someone decides to step up and take control of the floor, nothing will stop this team. We’ve seen it in JV, and with the mix that we have now, these Lady Knights will be unstoppable! The Ladies are back on the floor tomorrow night at home against Ledford. Game time is 6. Come out EARLY students, and support the LADY BLACK KNIGHTS!

Lady Knights Start Strong, Finish Strong in 59-53 Win Over Comets

By: Mike Darrow

The North Davidson Lady Knights Basketball team came out strong to start the game, finished strong and won a hard-fought battle with the Blue Comets of Asheboro 59-53 last night in Asheboro.  Avoiding the slow start that has plagued the girls so far this season, the Lady Knights scored 17 points in the first quarter to take a 17-14 lead.  Despite scoring only 8 points in the second, North held the Lady Comets to only 4 points and extended the lead to 25-18 at the half, led 41-38 after three and finished strong with 18 points in the fourth quarter for the final 6-point victory.

North led throughout the game until 3 minutes left in the game, when the Blue Comets took a one point lead.  The Lady Knights took the lead back quickly and never trailed the rest of the game.

The Lady Knights were led by Samantha Honeycutt and Sydney Bryan's 11 points.  Catie Hyatt chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds, Ali Lanier with 8 and Taylor Darrow and Alayaisa Lindsey with 6 each.  Honeycutt also had 3 steals, and Bryan led the way with 8 boards.  Overall, 9 girls scored in a very balanced, team victory.

The Lady Knights, now 2-2, will be back in action on Tuesday of this week at Greensboro Page.

Lady Knights Lose a Heartbreaker in OT

By: Jim Skotthy

Your Lady Knights were at Pete Jones Gym Wednesday evening to take on a talented East Davidson squad, and was on the losing end of a thrilling overtime contest. The final was 45-44.

East Davidson jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with some very crisp passing. The Lady Knights seemed tentative to start, and quickly fouled, resulting in a 6-0 lead for East Davidson. Taylor Darrow got the Knights on the board at the 6:02 mark to make it a 6-2 game. The Knights were in a kind of hybrid defense, not quite man to man, but not a zone either. Meanwhile East Davidson was playing excellent defense. North kept trying to go inside to get a bucket, but were coming up empty. With 2:49 to go in the first, it was still locked at 6-2. With only 1:40 left in the first, East stretched the lead to 6, 8-2. There was under a minute left in the first quarter, when Catie Hyatt hit a shot, and was fouled. She missed her free throw, and at the end of the 1st quarter, the score stood at 10-4 in favor of East Davidson.

In the second quarter, the Lady Knights scored quickly to make it a 10-6 contest. East answered with a basket. North began to put pressure on defense, and with 5:13 to go in the half, Alyssa Myrick was fouled. She made her free throws, bringing the Knights to within 4, at 12-8. Hyatt connected with 4:15 left, leaving the Knights only 2 points back at 12-10. Myrick was fouled again with 3:20 to go, and was solid on the line. The score was 15-12. A minute thirty one remained when Sydney Bryan was fouled. Shooting two, Bryan hits both, and the Knights trailed by only one 15-14. East made another basket before the half ended leaving the halftime score 17-14.

In the third quarter, Ivy Kiker scored 5 points to help the Knights get back into the game. East Davidson became very aggressive on defense, but that did not stop the Knights. With 3:27 to go, Kelcey Lowery hits two free throws to bring the Knights to within two points, 25-23. East went on a mini run and with 1:33 to go in the third it was 29-23 in favor of East. The third quarter ended with the score East Davidson 33, North Davidson 25.

Ali Lanier opened the Knight scoring in the fourth quarter with a three pointer, it was now 35-28. Hyatt made a great steal and scored. 35-30. A little later, Hyatt is fouled and makes her shots, it was 35-32. With 2:46 to go Kiker steals the ball and goes to the bucket, and the score was then 36-34. Alayasia Lindsay scores on a sweet pass from Alyssa Myrick, and suddenly the game is tied at 36. 1:05 remained in the game when Catie Hyatt is fouled again, hits her shots, and North finally takes the lead 38-36. Forty six seconds remained when East tied the score back up, and that’s how the fourth quarter ended, tied 38-38. Four minutes of overtime, and they were the most exciting four minutes you’ll ever want to see!

Catie Hyatt put North back up 40-38. The Lady Knights foul and East hits one of two, it’s 40-39. East fouls Alayasia Lindsay, and she connects….42-39. North puts on a high pressure defense, but in the process fouls. East makes both shots to make the score 42-41. East then steals the ball, the Knights foul, East makes their shot, and now East retakes the lead 43-42 with only 1:40 to go.

34.4 seconds remain, the score is still 43-42. Both teams playing with everything they’ve got. Great steals on both sides, but no one can seem to find the basket, until Ivy Kiker hits a shot with only 10 seconds remaining. North is up 44-43. Just good defense will ensure a win for the ladies, and that’s just what North did. They played GREAT defense, and forced East to take a time out with 3.5 seconds showing on the clock. After both teams broke from the huddle, North went back into the pressure defense, and seemed to lock down the player with the ball. As she was falling to the ground, she SOMEHOW got the ball up into the air and toward the basket. AT THE BUZZER, the ball fell through the hoop, and sending the Lady Knights to a heartbreaking 45-44 loss.

It was a great game to watch, and although the Knights came up short, they should be extremely proud of their effort.

The Knights are now 1-2 on the season, and travel down highway 64 this Friday night to take on Asheboro. Game time is 6pm. Hope to see you there pulling for the Lady Knights!

Lady Knights Stumble at Ledford

By: Mike Darrow

The Lady Knights Varsity Basketball team fell to the Ledford Lady Panthers 47-37 tonight in Wallburg.  While both teams struggled with any offense the first quarter, the Lady Knights struggled more, scoring only 1 point and trailing 8-1 after one.

The Lady Knights held serve in the second quarter, with each team scoring 8 points and the halftime score was 16-8 bad guys (or girls technically).  North was outscored 20-13 in the decisive 3rd quarter to be down 15 to start the fourth, and, despite a valiant effort defensively to close the gap to 7 at one point, could not finish down the stretch and fell by the final 10-point margin.  That 10-point margin equalled the number of free throws missed, with the Lady Knights shooting 15 of 25 or 60% from the charity stripe.

Coach Puckett summed up the game in one word - "Turnovers."  North had problems taking care of the basketball, and had 19 turnovers for the game.  That, and the missed free throws, were the biggest factor in the loss...but also items that can be improved or corrected.

The Lady Knights were led by Sydney Bryan 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.  Alayasia Lindsay scored 7, and Catie Hyatt and Alyssa Myrick each had 5 points and went 3 for 4 from the free throw line.

The Lady Knights have little time to dwell on this loss; their next game is tomorrow, Wednesday November 30th in the friendly confines of Pete Jones Gym.

Games Notes: Despite the turnovers and the issues at the free throw line, North was still in the game until a few minutes left in the game...the girls had several shots go in and out of the goal, especially in the first quarter...the Lady Knights are wearing a patch on their sleeves in memory of Clark Myrick, a big fan and the father of Alyssa who passed away from his battle with cancer prior to the season starting...8 different girls scored; the team is still looking for that outside shooter and will need to find that balance as teams collapse on Bryan and Hyatt underneath and dare the Lady Knights to shoot.

Lady Knights win first Basketball Game

By: Jim Skotthy

The Lady Black Knight Basketball teams had their first game Monday night, traveling to High Point Andrews. Both teams came out winners! The Varsity won by a score of 54-45.

Andrews came out quick, and is a very athletic team, according to head coach Kendra Puckett. Although the Knights had a height advantage, they came out a little slow in the first half, which should be expected, since they have not seen competition since last year.

North did a very good job of crashing boards, taking 14 offensive rebounds for the game. However, at the end of the first half, we were still down 29-26.

The second half was the difference, holding Andrews to just 16 points...meanwhile, our Lady Knights scored 28!

Coach Puckett thought it was a great season opener, and at the half made adjustments which would be the difference in the game. Puckett said she thought the team adjusted well to Andrew’s quickness, while getting back on defense quickly to stop the fast breaks, which is where they got their points in the first half. In addition, Andrews put on a full court pressure, and set a lot of traps, which confused North at first, but again, the adjustments at the half made the difference.

Puckett credited the team for being unselfish, and passing the ball, while working to break the trap and the full court press.

Catie Hyatt was the leading North scorer with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Sydney Bryan, Samantha Honeycutt, Taylor Darrow, Ivy Kiker, Alayasia Lindsay, Ali Lanier, Myeshia Liles, Alyssa Myrick, and Kelcey Lowery also contributed.
Congratulatons to our Lady Knights for the first win of the year!

Our JV team was also in action winning against Andrews by a score of 59-25. Hannah Sherman led the way with 16 points..Emily Rhodes and Summer McMillan each had 12!

The next game will be Tuesday at Ledford, and Next Wednesday, is the first home against East Davidson. COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR BLACK KNIGHTS!!!!
