Knight in the Spotlight
We sat down with a familiar face to the North Davidson Middle School Lady Black Knights basketball players to give everyone an opportunity to get to know her a little better and understand why she is driven to excel on and off the court. Here is the interview with Makayla Lilly.
Q: At what age did you first start playing basketball ?
A: Makayla : " I started playing in kindergarten , for Arcadia , while attending Northwest Elementary School. In the 3rd grade, I started playing AAU basketball and played for the Lady Knights for 3 years after that.
Q: Besides playing for the Black Knights, what other team do you currently play for?
A: Makayla : " I currently play travel ball with the Winston-Salem Stealers. I have been with them for 1 1/2 years now . We are having tryouts in March for this years teams and look forward to playing again this season. "
Q: How many months of the year are you currently playing basketball, either with NDMS or travel ball ?
A: Makayla : ' I currently travel ball 7 months out of the year and then school ball from November to February.."
Q: Do you work with a coach/instructor in addition to playing for NDMS ?
A: Makayla: " Yes, I have one-on-one sessions with Kat Lyons, who coaches 3 teams at different levels for the W-Salem Stealers .
Q: Tell us about your relationship with Kat?
A: Makayla: " She is a great coach and has taught me many things to make me a better player. Kat is a former University of Maryland player and pushes me to be the best I can be . Several times, I have went straight from a Black Knights games or practices to a one hour session with her to work on improving my game .
Q: How far have you travelled with the Stealers to play ?
A: Makayla : " We have gone from Richmond to Atlanta so far. This coming year, I believe that we will be going to Nashville, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia as well as other cities.
Q: Who is your role model ?
A: Makayla : " First, my grandparents, Chris and Patti Beane. Next, as far as a basketball role model, Maya Moore . She is a starting player for the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA, and a former UConn star . We went to Atlanta last year and saw them play and win the Championship . We actually got to go down on the court during the trophy presentation !
My other role model is Tim Tebow ! "
Q: Besides that , what has been your most memorable moment so far as a player ?
A: Makayla: " Last year when I hit the winning shot against Brown, at their court, as they always give us a tough game and it was great to be able to help our team win that game ! "
Q: What is your favorite college team ?
A: Makayla : ' The ECU Pirates.
Q: What would you like to be when you graduate college ?
A: Makayla: " I would like to be a nurse, AND, a motivational speaker!
Q: A motivational speaker? Can you give us some more insight on this desire?
A: Makayla: " Yes, I suppose it comes from one of my teammates, Samantha Lackey. She is great at always being positive and keeping us positive before, during and after each game! Samantha is always praising every player and pushing us to be our best. Watching her and the positive attitude she brings has made me want to do the same thing both on and off the court so being a motivational speaker would be such a positive and rewarding career, in addition to nursing!
Q: What is your goal when you take the floor before each game?
A: Makayla: " To be positive and give everything I have so our team succeeds. Having a good game is great, but knowing that we gave it our best effort as a team is more rewarding than my personal stats or performance."
Q: Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
A: Makayla: " My Grandparents, they are always there to support me . "
Q: What is your favorite subject in school and what is your favorite food?
A: Makayla: " Math.....and pizza from Mello Mushroom!
Q: When you are having a tough game, and things aren't going well, what goes thru your mind?
A: Makayla: "My favorite verse of scripture.." Philippians 4:13..I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me."
Q: Tell us about your other interests....
A: Makayla: " I attend First Baptist Church in Welcome . We have a basketball league that plays on Tuesday nights and it is coed which is a lot of fun. In fact, we just finished our second year of going undefeated ! I have also been on several mission trips with my church and really enjoy those.
Q: One last question...what is one thing that most people don't know about you?
A: Makayla: " That I am really shy. Until I get to know you ! "
After spending some time with Makayla and her grandparents, it is apparent that she is a very well mannered young lady. I spoke at length with Chris and Patti aside from Makayla and came away with the impression that Makayla not only loves to play basketball, but she is always striving to improve not only her game , but herself as well.Chris shared with me how many times, he will be outside practicing with Makayla at 6:30 am and as late as 10 pm at their home ,despite like most parents, being tired from a days work.
I also came away with the knowledge that Makayla, although still young in years, has a very good grasp on the most important things in life. Being a good basketball player is nice, but becoming the best person you can be is far more important. Having your priorities in the correct order in life will lead to success, whether it is on or off the court. I witnessed this at the conclusion of our interview. When asked if we could get a couple of pictures for this article, Makayla asked me to include a picture of her basketball shoes. As she brought them into the room, on each shoe was this , written in bold print...Phil 4:13...
