Catching Up With the JV Knights
By: Jim Skotthy
The JV Knights played in a Christmas tournament in Randolph County, and walked away with a third place finish. Their first game matched them up against the Greensboro Grimsley Whirlees, and won by a score of 58-43. Quin Cunningham scored 19 in the game and Jordan Santana added 11 in the contest. The semifinal game featured a team by the name of Kilsyth. They hail from Australia, and in a hard fought and physical game, the Knights lost 55-48. Cunningham had an incredible 29 points. The third place game, had the Knights taking on East Chapel Hill, and the Knights won 43-27. Cunningham scored 20 in that game, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Well done!
On Tuesday of this week, the JV’s hosted RJR in Welcome, and won 52-44. The Knights had a 9-2 lead after one quarter, but played poorly in the second quarter. Turnovers by the Knights cut the lead and at the half the score was 24-18. The second half showed improved defense, and better handling of the ball.

JV Knights Keep Rolling, Down East Davidson
The JV Knights took on the East Davidson Golden Eagles yesterday in Pete Jones Gym and walked away with an easy 46-24 win!
East Davidson played a 2-3 defense for the majority of the game and even though the zone was effective, the zone did not stop the Knights from scoring. The Knights played a full court press from the beginning of the game and it resulted in a lot of turnovers and easy layups. Q Cunningham was the leading Knight scorer with 16 points, Jordan Santana added 9 in the cause. The Knights played a much better defensive game, which was the difference in the contest.
The JV Black Knights , NOW 6-2, will be playing in a holiday tournament, which they have not done is many years. The first game is Tuesday, December 27th in the first round of the Asheboro-Randolph JV tournament. They will take on Greensboro Grimsley. All games will be in Asheboro. We wish the JV Knights luck in the upcoming tournament! GO KNIGHTS!

Knights Defeat Smith 50-42
By: Jim Skotthy
The Black Knight JV team took on Greensboro Smith on Thursday in Welcome, and came away with a 50-42 victory! The Knights did an awesome job on defense. They played a sagging man to man defense trying to keep the Smith players in front of them to limit the dribble penetration. It worked. By the end of the first quarter, the Knights were in the lead, 10-7.
Smith tied the score early in the second quarter at 10, but the Knights were determined, and played with a passion. An example of that was an aggressive play by Tanner Wollen. Late in the second quarter, with the score 19-16, he dove on the floor going after the ball, and kept it alive for the Knights. It helped, because by the end of the half, it was a one point game, 19-18. It was the best game the Knights have played defensively all year according to Coach Flynn.
Smith had a half court trap that gave the Knights fits at times and as a result turned the ball over a little too much. However, consistent scoring by Jordan Santana, Mason Hicks, Josh Roberson and “Q” Cunningham kept the Knights in the game.
Smith moved into a 2-3 zone and once they did, the Knights did a much better job executing offensively. Jordan Santana did an excellent job on the boards. Nelson Leake and Noah Hicks did a good job handling their pressure. Mason Hicks did a good job doing all the dirty work down low.
The Knights played the Thomasville Bulldogs on Friday evening, and we’ll have the news on that game as it is received. The next game for the JV’s is on Tuesday at home against East Davidson. It’s the last game prior to the holidays, so make sure you come out and support the Black Knights!
Scoring
Josh Roberson 8
Q. Cunningham 15
Jordan Santana 12
Nelson Leake 4
Mason Hicks 9
Grayland McKoy 2

The JV Black Knights traveled to Asheboro last night to take on the Blue Comets, and came away with a 51-49 victory!
Asheboro played a zone defense the entire game, which served to frustrate the Knights shooting, but for the first half, it didn’t seem to make much difference. After the first quarter, the Knights led 12-8. At the half, the Black Knights stretched the lead and led 24-17.
The third quarter could have been the undoing for the Knights, at one point holding a 13 point lead, however poor offensive decisions in the quarter allowed the Blue Comets to end the quarter in a tie at 35.
In the fourth, the Knights got back on track, outscoring Asheboro 16-14 to make the final 51-49. Overall the Knights played good defense, and that just might have been the difference in the game! Quin “Q” Cunningham led the Knights with 20 points.
The team, now at 4-2, will be at home Thursday on a men’s only Knight, as we welcome Greensboro Smith. The game begins at 6pm, right after the Freshman Knights, who welcome East Forsyth. The Varsity men follow the JV game. Come on out and catch this JV team, you will not be disappointed!

JV’s Take Page to OT Drop to 3-1
By: Jim Skotthy
The Black Knight men faced off against Page this evening and in overtime fell 76-73.
This team, lead by Coach Flynn and Coach Staten are a talented bunch, patient, and well coached.
Josh Roberson hit the first bucket of the night for North one minute into the game. Page, quickly answered, but then Quin “Q” Cunningham hit the first of his many shots to give the Knights a 4-2 lead.
With 5:37 left in the first, Page took a 6-5 lead, but just a few short seconds later, Austin Barber launched a three that was true. North led 8-6. Much of the rest of the quarter was trading baskets and at the end of the first quarter, the Pirates held a 15-10 lead.
Cunningham came out to start the second with another basket, after being fed a sweet pass from Nelson Leake to make the score 15-12. After trading a couple of baskets, the score stood at 20-14 in favor of Page. With 5:13 left to go in the half, Austin Barber fed Mason Hicks with a great pass for an easy layup, bringing the score to 24-16. The Knights suddenly went cold, nothing was going through the hoop, and with 1:17 remaining, the score was a ten point lead, 28-18. With just under 30 seconds to go, North took a time out to try to set a play. A three quarter floor length pass to Cunningham gave him a look at a long three, but it didn’t drop, so the score at the half was 31-18.
In the third quarter, Josh Roberson opened with a three to cut the lead to 10. With 7:15 remaining, Barber knocked down another 3 points to bring the score to 33-24. 3:46 was left on the clock in the third, when Roberson took a hard foul, hitting one of two shots. The score was 42-30. Noah Hicks drilled a three at the 3:25 mark to pull the score to 42-33. Jordan Santana is fouled on the next possession and hits both the free throws, and the score is 42-35. North is slowly making a move. Mason Hicks is fouled with 1:47 left, and makes his shots, it’s 42-38. Cunningham connected again to make it a two point game 42-40. Grayland McKoy knocked down 2 points and we had a tie game at 42. Just over ten seconds remained in the third when Cunningham was fouled. He made his shots, and North ended the third with the lead, 44-42.
The first half of the fourth quarter was pretty even, with both teams making shots. With 3:30 left in the game, the Knights execute a beautiful fast break, Cunningham is fouled. After his shots, North lead 52-45. Page then went on a little run and tied the score at 52 with 2:35 to go. Just under a minute remained, and Barber hit a big shot to move the score to 57-54 in favor of the Knights. With 17.3 seconds to go, Page made an unbelievable shot for three to once again tie the game at 59. Overtime…here we come.
The first couple of minutes of overtime was fast and furious, with no one getting a big advantage. With 1:24 to go, Santana makes two free throws, and North is down by two, 69-67. Twenty seconds to go, and Mason Hicks is fouled. He hit one of two shots, North was behind 73-69. Cunningham stole the ball with 9.6 seconds and was fouled. He hit both his shots, and it was a two point game 73-71. North fouls, and believe it or not, finally put Page on the line for 1 and 1’s. A great testament to hard play without racking up the fouls. But it was not enough, as Page made their shots and pulled out a hard earned 76-73 victory. The Knights are on the road this Friday to take on the Ledford Panthers. Come out and support your JV Black Knights!

JV’s Have Perfect Week
By: Jim Skotthy
The North Davidson JV Men’s basketball team completed a 3 game sweep this week.
On Tuesday of this week, the first test was against Ledford. North got a good quick start, utilizing a full court press and jumped out to a 14-3 lead. Things settled down after that and after one quarter it was the Knights 17, Ledford 8. Ledford came out in the second quarter with a good defense, and sloppy play by the Knights resulted in a two point lead 29-27.
In the third quarter, the Knights settled down, and despite missing numerous easy layups, the score was still in our favor, 36-30. In the final quarter, North put defensive pressure on Ledford again, using the full court press, and we built the lead to 16 points. At the end, the JV Knights had a 50-40 win! Quin Cunningham had 21 points in the game, and Mason Hicks added 10. Jordan Santana was a beast on defense with 13 rebounds, and 6 blocks.
On Wednesday, the JV’s continued the winning streak, beating East Davidson by a score of 57-41. Quin Cunningham had 28 points in the game, and Tanner Woollen had 3 off the bench.
Friday, the team faced the Blue Comets of Asheboro…winning again 61-48. Once again, Quin Cunningham shot lights out with a total of 27 points. Josh Roberson poured in 10.
The JV’s are now 3-0, a great start to the season. You get a chance to see them in action again on Tuesday, when they face off against the Page Pirates at home. Game time is 6pm. Come out and support the JV Knights!
