Coach Crotts Corner

This Week in Black Knight Wrestling 11/28-12/3

By: Danny Crotts

This week saw the Black Knights wrestle on Wednesday night in a Tri match with Statesville and North Iredell.  Unfortunately, we lost two very close matches on Wednesday night.  On Saturday we travelled to West Wilkes High School for the Blackhawk Invitational.  The Black Knights were able to finish 4th as a team out of 13 teams and were able to continue their success of having Wrestlers in the Finals with four wrestlers, Jacob Lester, Cody Tysinger, Cody Downs and Nick Wimmer all competing for the Championship, while Jan Pabon and Taylor Richardson were competing for 3rd Place.  To find the results, please continue reading.

Tri Match at North Iredell – Wednesday November 30, 2011

The Black Knights traveled to North Iredell High School for a Tri-Match.  Just like last week, the Black Knights would be taking on Statesville and North Iredell on the evening.  We started with Statesville and we started at 106.

Spener Ader took to the mat for the Black Knights.  Spencer got taken down and turned right and left and then found himself on his back and unable to get off of it and lost by pin.  Black Knights down 0-6.

Gabe White was next.  Gabe got taken down, but quickly got back to his feet.  The same thing happened, Gabe was taken down, but he got back to his feet.  Gabe then got a take down and put his opponent on their back and Gabe won by pin.  Score tied, 6-6.

Brandon Blackburn was making his debut as a Black Knight next.  Brandon circled, but was taken down and put on his back and lost by pin.  Black Knights down 6-12.

Dylan Robertson was up next.  Dylan got a take down but let his man go.  Dylan then got another take down, but accidently started a Full Nelson and gave up a penalty point.  Dylan went into the 2nd period up 4-2.  Dylan gave up another escape, but got a Take down.  Then gave up another escape and got another take down.  This time Dylan put his man on his back and kept him there for the pin.  Score tied again, 12-12.

Hunter Clark was up next, and like Brandon was making his debut as a Black Knight.  Hunter got taken down and was fighting from side to side on his back, but was unable to get off of it, losing by pin.  Black Knights down 12-18.

Caleb Wilson was up next and he was also making his Black Knight debut.  Caleb was taken down, but he got back to his feet.  He was taken down again and put on his back, but he fought off of it to go into the 2nd period.  He got caught in a pinning combination and lost by pin.  Black Knights down 12-24.

Jan Pabon was up next.  He got a take down, but gave up an escape to go to the 2nd period up 2-1.  Jan then spent just about the entire 2nd period trying to turn his opponent, but was able to secure the pin in the closing seconds of the 2nd period.  Black Knights down 18-24.

Jacob Lester was up next, Jacob gave up a take down but got back to his feet to go into the 2nd period down 1-2.  We chose bottom in the 2nd, and the opponent locked hands.  On the restart, he put Jacob on his back but Jacob got a reversal at the end of the 2nd period.  Jacob was on top in the 3rd period and turned his man to his back.  Jacob won a decision, 8-5.  Black Knights down 21-24.

Taylor Richardson was up next.  Taylor gave up a take down, but immediately got a reversal and put his man on his back in the process, securing the pin.  Black Knights in the lead, 27-24.

Cody Tysinger was up next for the Black Knights.  Cody got a take down about halfway thru the 1st period and gave up an escape towards the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd.  Cody then got an escape of his own in the 2nd, to go up 3-1.  In the 3rd period, Cody rode tough trying to turn his opponent to his back, but was unable to do so, and gave up an escape.  Cody then defended a shot in the closing seconds to win a decision, 3-2.  Black Knights up 30-24.

Cody Downs was up next for the Black Knights.  Cody gave up a take down and got put on his back in the first period, but managed to not get pinned and headed into the 2nd period down 0-5.  Cody couldn’t get on track in the 2nd period either, he got taken down, but got back to his feet for the escape, but got taken down again and pinned in the 2nd period.  Score tied up again, 30-30.

Jared Reeves made his debut for the Black Knights next.  Jared got caught in a bad position on his feet and he was taken down and put on his back and lost by pin.  Black Knights down 30-36.

Bryson Starling was up next.  Bryson got taken down, but managed to stay off of his back so heading into the 2nd period, he was down only 0-2.  In the 2nd period, Bryson gave up an escape and a take down, but again managed to stay off of his back.  In the 3rd period, Bryson was finally turned to his back and could not get off of it and lost by pin.  Black Knights down 30-42.

Nick Wimmer came up last for the Black Knights.  He spent a first period jockeying for position and no scoring occurred in the 1st period.  In the 2nd period, Nick gave up an escape and then got a take down and near fall and then finished the pin.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough points for the Black Knights, as we dropped a 36-42 decision.

Gabe White was up first.  Gabe was taking on a returning state runner-up.  Gabe was taken down, but he fought off of his back the first time, but the second time he was not so lucky as the North Iredell grappler secured the pin for the host team.  The Black Knights are down 0-6.

Brandon Blackburn was up next for the Black Knights and he received a forfeit.  This tied the score, 6-6.

Dylan Robertson was up next.  Dylan gave up a take down after some position jockeying.  He was put on his back, but he fought off of it, only to be turned a 2nd time and that time, Dylan did not get off of his back.  The Black Knights were now down 6-12.

Hunter Clark was up next.  He was taken down, and put on his back and couldn’t find a way to get off of it and suffered the pin fall loss.  The Black Knights were now down 6-18.

restarted in Referee’s position.  Caleb was put on his back again, but he managed to not get pinned and went into the 2nd period down 1-8.  Caleb gave up a reversal in the 2nd period, and found himself on his back again, and unable to get off of it this time and suffered the loss by pin.  The Black Knights were now down 6-24.

Jan Pabon was up next.  Jan, after a feeling out process from both wrestlers, Jan secured a take down and was able to ride out his opponent for the rest of the period.  In the 2nd period, Jan got a reversal, but let his opponent go.  Jan then got another take down, but gave up an escape as time was winding down in the period.  Heading into the 3rd period, Jan was up 6-2. Jan gave up another escape to start the 3rd and then got another take down.  Jan let his North Iredell counterpart go and got another take down to close out the match with the decision victory, 10-4.  The Black Knights were now down 9-24.

Jacob Lester was up next.  Jacob gave up a take down and was put on his back and he fought off of it once and got put on it again as time wound down.  Jacob went into the 2nd period down 0-7.  There was no scoring in the 2nd period by either wrestler.  Jacob took neutral in the 3rd period and was taken down, but managed to not be turned but lost the major decision, 0-9.  The Black Knights were down 9-28.

Taylor Richardson was up next for the Black Knights and he received a forfeit.  The Black Knights were down 15-28.

Cody Tysinger was up next.  Cody got a take down and put his opponent on his back and secured the pin victory.  The Black Knights close to 21-28.

Cody Downs was up next.  Cody got a take down and near fall, then got out of position and gave up an escape.  Cody then got another take down and again, put his counterpart on his back for more near fall but got out of position and gave up a reversal to close the period.  Cody had the lead 8-3.  In the 2nd period, Cody turned the North Iredell grappler again, but couldn’t secure the pin and gave up an escape.  Cody got another take down, but locked up a full nelson and gave up a penalty point.  After the restart, Cody then got his opponent on his back again for good this time as he secured the pin.  The Black Knights were now down 27-28.

Jared Reeves was up next for the Black Knights.  Jared was taken down straight to his back and could not get off of it and lost by pin.  The Black Knights were now down 27-34 with 3 matches to go, so we still had a chance.

Bryson Starling came up next for the Black Knights.  Bryson got the take down for the Black Knights, but got high on his opponents back and gave up a reversal and got put on his back and he was unable to get off of it and lost by pin.  The Black Knights were now down 27-40.

Nick Wimmer was up next and received a forfeit.  The Black Knights were down 33-40.

Blackhawk Invitational 12-3-11 @ West Wilkes High School

The Black Knights got up early this Saturday morning and headed to West Wilkes High School for the Blackhawk Invitational.  This has been a very good tournament since I was in high school, many moons ago and we were fortunate enough to be allowed to come last year.  Now, something I have tried to do each year that I have coached is go to a tournament with one of my friends here in Davidson County.  Normally, this is my old high school, the one I graduated from and coached at starting out, West Davidson.  We have traveled to Wakefield together before and last year we were able to make the trip to West Wilkes together.  It just makes too much sense to split the gas on one bus as opposed to two buses from Davidson County making the trip to the same spot.  It has also worked out that the last two years we actually have not wrestled many matches against each other at this tournament.

Round 1 – Round of 16

We had a few wrestlers taking part in the round of 16 today.

Spencer Ader took to the mat to start the day for the Black Knights.  Spencer was taken down and put on his back and unable to get off of it and lost by pin, dropping him down to the consolation bracket.

Gabe White was up next.  The Final score would make you think it was a football game.  As back and forth matches go, this was one of the best that I’ve seen.  Gabe was able to come out on top, 26-18 to advance to the Quarter-finals.

Caleb Wilson was up next.  Caleb couldn’t get started with his offense, but fought off his back each time he got put on it, but lost a major decision, 2-12 and dropped to the consolation bracket.

Bryson Starling finished the round of 16 off for the Black Knights.  Bryson got taken down and in trying to get a reversal turned to his back and hooked the head of his opponent (A West Davidson Wrestler no less) and got pinned, dropping down to the consolation bracket.

Things are not starting great for the Black Knights, as a team we are in 12th place (out of 13 teams) at the end of the first round.

Quarterfinals

Gabe White was up first and he took on the same young man from Surry Central he opened the season with two weeks ago.  Unfortunately, it was the same result, as Gabe was taken down and put on his back and lost by pin, dropping him to the Consolation bracket.

Brandon Blackburn was up next.  Brandon circled with his opponent for a few moments and then was taken down.  Brandon was turned to his back and unable to get off of it and lost by pin, dropping him to the Consolation bracket.

Dylan Robertson took the mat for the Black Knights next.  Dylan was taking on a defending state champion from West Wilkes.  Dylan got taken down and turned to his back, but managed to get a reversal, only to give up an escape and another takedown, trailing 2-8 headed into the 2nd.  Dylan gave up a reversal in which he got turned to his back and lost by pin, dropping him to the Consolation bracket. Jan Pabon was up next for the Black Knights.  He was also rematching someone from opening night, his young man from North Surry.  Jan dominated this match, until the 3rd period when each wrestler traded some scores, but Jan was able to pull out the decision victory, 9-5, advancing to the Semi-finals for the second straight week.Jacob Lester was up next for the Black Knights, and like Jan and Gabe was rematching someone from opening night.  On opening night, Jacob posted a pin victory, today, it was a much tighter

match, which required Jacob to stay off of his back in the closing seconds to pull out the 8-6 decision, advancing to the Semi-Finals for the second straight week just like Jan.

Taylor Richardson was up next.  Taylor took on a North Surry wrestler but it was a different one than he faced on opening night.  Taylor got a takedown and put the wrestler on his back in the process and secured the pin victory to advance to the Semi-Finals for the second straight week like his previous two teammates, Jan and Jacob.

Cody Tysinger was up next.  Cody shot in for a takedown, and the other wrestler fell to his back and went flat for the pin, advancing Cody to the Semi-Finals for his 2nd straight week as well.

Cody Downs was up next and he got sloppy in neutral and was taken down.  He then came back strong scoring an escape, then a takedown and then some near fall before the 1st period ended.  Then in the 2nd period, he got a reversal and put his opponent on his back for the pin victory, advancing to the Semi-finals for, yep, you guessed it, the 2nd straight week.

Nick Wimmer was up next, and he snapped his opponent down and turned him to his back to secure the pin, and just like his previous teammates, advanced to the Semi-Finals for the 2nd straight week.

1st Round Consolations

Spencer Ader was up first on the Consolation mat.  Spencer failed to sprawl when his opponent shot in on him and was taken to his back and pinned, eliminating him from the tournament.

Gabe White was next up on the Consolation mat.  Gabe put on a clinic in dismantling his opponent on the way to an 18-1 Techincal Fall, advancing to the Consi-Quarters.

Caleb Wilson was up next for the Black Knights on the consolation mat.  Caleb scored the opening takedown of the match, only to be reversed and put on his back.  He fought off the pin attempt and in the 2nd period, he got caught on his back and was unable to get off of it, losing by pin, eliminating him from the tournament.

Bryson Starling was up next for the Black Knights on the consolation mat.  Bryson was very active on his feet, securing a takedown in the first period.  In the 2nd period, Bryson locked hands twice and then gave up an escape.  Bryson got that back though with a takedown, but got high again trying to get his pin and was reversed and put on his back and pinned, eliminating him from the tournament.

As a team right now, we have moved up in the standings and depending on the results as they came in, 6th to 9th.

Semi-Finals/Consi-Quarters

We ran these rounds together to try to speed up the tournament, but it could only go so fast on 2 mats.

First up was Gabe White in the Consi-Quarters.  Gabe was again caught in a high scoring match.  Gabe started off behind as he got taken down and put on his back, but he did get a reversal before the 1st period ended.  Gabe then erupted for points in the 2nd period, with a penalty point, then a reversal, then some near fall, another near fall, then he gave up an escape but ended the period with a takedown.  Gabe then scored some more points in the 3rd period and won a major decision, 20-11, advancing to the Consi-Semi’s.

Brandon Blackburn was up next in the consolation Quarters.  Brandon was taken down, but not turned in the 1st period.  In the 2nd period, Brandon took bottom, and was turned once, he fought off his back, but got put back on it and couldn’t get off of it, losing by pin, eliminating him from the tournament.

Dylan Robertson was next in the consolation Quarters.  Dylan gave up a takedown, but quickly reversed and turned his opponent, getting out of position and giving up an escape.  In the 2nd period, Dylan got a reversal.  He then turned his counterpart two times before giving up an escape, only to get a takedown to his back and win by pin, advancing to the Consi-Semi’s.

Jan Pabon was up next in the Semi-Finals.  Jan quickly got a takedown and rode out his opponent for the rest of the period.  In the 2nd period, Jan gave up an escape, but got another takedown and rode out for the 2nd period as well, taking a 4-1 lead.  In the 3rd, things flipped around on us, we were turned to our back, tying up the score, then we got an escape to go up by one point.  Jan then shot in for a takedown and instead of getting the takedown, was taken down to his back, giving up a 5 point move as time expired, losing a decision, 5-9, dropping him to the Consi-Semi’s.

Jacob Lester was up next in the Semi-Finals.  Jacob got taken down and looked to be in trouble on his back, but fought off of his back.  Down by 5 points now, Jacob got a reversal and turned his opponent to tie up the score headed into the 2nd period.  Jacob got another near fall in the 2nd period, but gave up a reversal.  Jacob got an escape as time was winding down to take a 8-7 lead.  The 3rd period saw both wrestlers score a lot of points.  Jacob got an escape and a takedown with nearfall, but was reversed and put on his back as time expired.  Thankfully, Jacob acquired enough points to win the 14-12 decision and advance to his first Finals ever!

Taylor Richardson was up next in the Semi-Finals.  Taylor scored the only points of the 1st period with a takedown.  There were no points in the 2nd period from either wrestler.  Taylor went into the 3rd period with a 2-0 lead.  The other wrestler chose bottom and got an escape.  He then took a shot on Taylor and Taylor was defending it and lost his grip as time was winding down, Taylor went down by 1 and was unable to score either an escape or reversal.  Taylor now would drop down to the Consi-Semi’s.

Cody Tysinger was up next.  He completely dominated his match and took the positions to where he wanted them, when he wanted to go there.  At the end of the 1st period, he had a 12-0 lead.  In the 2nd period, he secured a takedown and a near fall to win by technical fall.  Cody was the defending champion here last year, so he is making not only his 2nd Finals appearance in 2 weeks, but also the 2nd time at this tournament.

Cody Downs was up next in the Semi-Finals.  Cody gave up a takedown quickly in the 1st period, but battled back to his feet and secured an escape for himself.  We went to the 2nd period Cody gave up an escape but got a takedown, he couldn’t hold the takedown and gave up an escape.  He then got another takedown, but gave up a reversal and then got away and in a scramble found himself on top and he secured the pin and his 2nd straight week into the Finals!

Nick Wimmer was the last match for the Black Knights in the Semi-Finals.  Nick was taken down, but got a reversal and put his counterpart on his back and he secured the pin and moved to his 2nd straight finals.

Consi-Semi’s

Gabe White is up first in this round.  Gabe got a takedown, but gave up a reversal as time was expiring at the end of the 1st period, tying up the score 2-2. In the 2nd period, Gabe gave up a reversal and some near fall, but he fought off of his back and got an escape.  Gabe then got takendown and was trying to fight off of his back, but as time was expiring succumbed to the pin, eliminating him from the tournament.

Dylan Robertson was up next in this round.  Dylan was rematching someone from opening night.  Dylan was taken down and found himself on his back and was unable to get off of it and was pinned, eliminating him from the tournament.

Jan Pabon was up next.  Jan put on a takedown clinic in this round and took the match where ever he wanted to take it.  He won a major decision, 18-4, advancing to the Consi-Finals (Chance to get 3rd Place).

Taylor Richardson took the mat next.  Taylor much like Jan, completely dominated this match, winning a major decision, 16-5, advancing to the Consi-Finals (Chance to get 3rd Place).

Consi-Finals

Jan Pabon was up first for the Black Knights.  Jan got a takedown.  Jan gave up an escape in the 2nd period, but got a takedown and put his opponent on his back.  In the 3rd period, Jan got another takedown to win the match and take 3rd place with an 8-2 decision.

Taylor Richardson was up next and he was taking on his opponent from the first match of the day.  Taylor dominated the 1st period with a takedown and near fall, but gave up an escape, taking a 4-1 lead into the 2nd period.  The 2nd period saw both wrestlers score a bunch of points, with Taylor taking a 12-8 lead.  In the 3rd period, Taylor scored at will, racking up 9 points to win a major decision, 21-8 and take 3rd place.

Finals

Jacob Lester was up first.  Jacob was taken down and rode out.  There were a few potentially dangerous situations, Jacob is very tough to pin or put on his back for that matter.

Jacob fought tough and was down 0-5 at the end of the first.  In the 2nd period, it was more of the same, Jacob fought and twisted and turned to stay off his back, but got put on it for some near fall, but got off of it and got an escape.  There were no points in the 3rd period for either wrestler, but some more potentially dangerous.  Jacob lost the match by decision, 1-8, taking 2nd place.

Cody Tysinger was up next.  Cody was also in a rematch from opening night.  Cody got a takedown in the first period and managed to ride out his opponent.  In the 2nd, his opponent chose neutral and Cody got another takedown.  In the 3rd period, Cody was able to get a reversal and turn his opponent 2 times, taking a major decision, 12-0 and repeating as Blackhawk Invitational Champion.

Cody Downs was up next and just like Cody Tysinger, was in a rematch from opening night.  Cody shot in for a takedown, but was instead taken down and put on his back, but he fought his way off of his back and got an escape.  Again, he took a good shot, but was taken down and put on his back for good this time, losing by pin, taking 2nd place.

Nick Wimmer was the last match of the tournament.  As a freshmen, this may be pretty nerve racking, but Nick has taken it all in stride, and as a first year wrestler, has so far, made the Finals of each tournament we have been to.  Nick could not get on track in the 1st period and got off balance and found himself taken down and on his back, but he fought off of it, and managed to just about make it back to his feet, but wasn’t able to do so.  In the 2nd period, he found himself again on his back and this time he wasn’t able to get off of it and was pinned, taking 2nd place.

The Black Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, at West Rowan, taking on West Rowan and Central Davidson, with matches starting at 6 PM.

This week in Black Knight Wrestling

This week in Black Knight Wrestling saw the team with a Tri-Match on Tuesday and host a tournament this past Saturday. Some of the Black Knights were able to go undefeated for the week, Seth Murdock, Jan Pabon, Taylor Richardson and Cody Tysinger. Here is a description of both the Tri-Match and the tournament.
I also want to give a big thanks to all of the Parents who helped with the Tournament Saturday. Without you, we would not have the success we have and it is greatly appreciated!
Tuesday – Dual Matches versus North Surry and Surry Central
On Tuesday, we travelled to West Davidson for some dual matches. Now, the funny thing about this evening was that we would not be wrestling West Davidson on this trip, but we would be participating in the Davidson County/Surry County challenge. North Davidson, West Davidson, North Surry and Surry Central were the teams involved in this opening night action for all four teams. This idea was concocted by all of the coaches involved last season. We all get along and are friends and decided that we would like to maybe set something up where we would wrestle a tri-match (Which means 2 matches in one night) since the state allows us to have a Tri-Match and tournament in the same week now so we decided to have this little challenge and rotate host schools/counties. This starting year, due to a conflict at the Surry County schools, West Davidson took the hosting duties for the first set of matches.
We got to West Davidson and the best thing possible for the Wrestling Team happened, we ALL made weight with no issues at all for any of the young men competiting. We started with North Surry for the first match and we started with Nick Wimmer at 285. Nick is just a freshmen for the Black Knights and is learning very fast in his first year of wrestling. Nick went thru a scoreless first period and he chose down to start the 2nd period and quickly got an escape. Nick then started the 3rd period in the Top position. Nick locked hands and gave up an escape, causing him to drop behind by 1 point. He then got a takedown to take the lead, but gave up another escape. Nick would not be denied and secured a takedown in the closing seconds to secure a 5-3 decision win and a 3-0 lead for the Black Knights in the team score.
Spencer Ader was up next for the Black Knights at 106. Spencer is also a 9th grader in his first year of wrestling. Spencer was taken down and unable to get off of his back and suffered the loss by pin. The Black Knights were now down 3-6 in the team score.
Gabe White was next at 113 for the Black Knights. Gabe is also a 9th grader and first year wrestler as well. Gabe was taken down and put on his back, but he fought off of his back but unfortunately was put back on it and unable to get off of it and was pinned. The team score was now 3-12 for North Surry.
Nick Jarvis was the next Black Knight to take the mat and the 120 weight class. Yep, you guessed, it, Nick is also a 9th grader and first year wrestler. We are a mix of first year and experienced wrestlers. Nick was taken down and fought for some position, but was put on his back and like his teammates before him, was unable to get of his back and lost by pin. Black Knights falling farther behind, 3-18.
Dylan Robertson was next and unlike his previous teammates, Dylan has been wrestling with us for three years now. Dylan is in the 126 weight class, and he was taken down, but fought to get an escape. He was taken down again, this time to his back and unable to get off of it. Black Knights down 3-24.
Seth Murdock took the mat next at 132. Seth wasted no time in securing a takedown and putting his North Surry counterpart on his back to get the pin. Black Knights dig into the Greyhound lead, 9-24.

Nick Jarvis was up next for the Black Knights. Nick was taken down and fought to try to get back to his feet but was unable to do so and was pinned. Nick was in a weight class with only three wrestlers, so Nick finished in 3rd place for the tournament. Dylan Robertson was in this round in the consolations. Dylan was able to put together his best match of the season and he won by pin, advancing to the Consi-Semi’s.
Seth Murdock was up next for the Black Knights and he followed his Quarter-Finals match to a T, as he dominated the first period with a takedown and near fall. He secured the pin in the 2nd period and advanced to the Finals, his first trip.
Jan Pabon was next up for the Black Knights. Jan was in a back and forth match in the Semi’s but pulled out the victory, with an 8-4 decision, advancing to the Finals. So far, that’s 3 for 4 in the Finals for the Black Knights!
Jacob Lester was up next and he fought with all of his heart. He refused to be pinned and he fought with all that he had to fight with. Jacob injured his shoulder in the match and lost a major decision, 12-3. Jacob would continue in the tournament even with the injury into the Consolations.
Taylor Richardson was up next. Taylor had a back and forth match as well. Taylor needed a takedown in the closing seconds and the near fall that came with it to pull out the 11-8 victory and a spot in the Finals, his first trip.
Cody Tysinger was up next. Cody wasted no time getting a takedown and pin for the Black Knights advancing to yet another Finals for his high school career.
Cody Downs was up next. Cody dominated the first period and got his pin in the 2nd period to advance to the Finals, his first trip to a Finals.
This brought us to Nick Wimmer. Nick is an athletic heavyweight but he has some trouble with someone smaller than him that tries to out athlete him. Nick was down by a point headed into the 3rd period. Nick would not be denied and he won a 6-4 decision to advance to the first Finals of his high school career.
So, we had 9 Black Knights in the Semi-Finals and 7 of them advanced to the Finals. This also propelled us to the team lead.
We had the Consi-Semi Finals up next. If you win, you got a chance to wrestle for 3rd/4th place and if you lost you were eliminated from the tournament. We only had a few wrestlers in this round.
Spencer Ader was up first. Spencer just could not get on track. Spencer was taken down and rode out for the first period. Spencer then was unable to get away in the 2nd period. He was unable to keep his opponent down in the 3rd period and was caught on his back and lost by pin, eliminating him from the tournament.
Dylan Robertson was up next. Dylan got taken down and had looks of frustration on his face and then something clicked and he was able to get the takedown but was unable to hold his opponent there. Dyaln then got caught in the 3rd period on his back and was unable to get off of it, and was pinned, eliminating Dylan’s tournament as well. Jacob Lester was up next for the Black Knights. Hurt shoulder and all he went out on the mat and gave it his all. Jacob came up short in the match and was eliminated from the tournament.
Tyler Roumillat was up next for the Black Knights. Tyler was able to get a takedown, but was rolled to his back and pinned, eliminating him from the tournament as well.

Jeremy Hill was up next in the 138 weight class. Jeremy got taken down and went for a roll and got caught on his back giving up near fall. Jeremy fought back though and got a reversal as time expired in the 1st period. Jeremy took bottom in the 2nd period and got another reversal but was unable to turn his opponent, heading into the 3rd period down 4-5. The North Surry wrestler took neutral and neither young man was able to get a takedown in the 3rd period, so Jeremy lost the hard fought decision. The Black Knights hole got bigger, 9-27.
Jan Pabon took the mat next at 145. Jan is also an experienced wrestler, even as a sophomore, he has been with us for a few years. Jan was able to get a takedown in the first period and ride his opponent out for the rest of the period. In the 2nd period, the North Surry wrestler took neutral and Jan got another takedown but was unable to turn his opponent. Jan took bottom in the 3rd period. The North Surry wrestler locked hands and then Jan got an escape to go up 6-0 in the score. Jan got another takedown and this time put the opposition on his back, but he was unable to get the pin and the North Surry wrestler got an escape, but Jan took him down again as time was expiring to win a 13-1 major decision and cut back into the Greyhound lead, 13-27.
Jacob Lester took to the mat next and is in his second year wrestling with us at the 152 weight class. Jacob was defending a shot and was called for fleeing the mat and gave up a penalty point. Jacob then got a takedown and pin for the Black Knights, now down 19-27.
Taylor Richardson, another experienced wrestler for us took the mat next at 160. Taylor, much like Seth earlier wasted no time at all in getting a takedown and then getting the pin fall victory, Black Knights only down 25-27 now.
Cody Tysinger, our returning state placer took the mat next at the 170 weight class. Cody got a takedown and turned his opponent in the first period to take a 4-0 lead. In the 2nd period, Cody took bottom and got a reversal but was unable to get any near fall. In the 3rd period the North Surry wrestler took bottom and Cody let him up. Cody then got a takedown and put him on his back for more near fall and as time expired Cody had won a 10-1 major decision. The Black Knights now had the lead back, 29-27.
Cody Downs, another returning wrestler was next at 182 pounds. Cody got taken down, but got back to his feet and got an escape. He got in deep on a shot, but was unable to finish and was taken down and put on his back and unable to get off of it, the Black Knights were down again, 29-33.
Kameron Dozier an 11th grader, but first year wrestler was next at 195. Kam was taken down, but got an escape and then was taken down again. It was here that things got interesting, as the ref signaled the takedown, then went to the mat and slapped a pin fall? The problem was, he took his eyes off the wrestlers, as he went from his feet to his knees and slapped the mat. If he had been looking at the wrestlers, he would have seen, Kameron was on his side, not his back where the pinning area is on a wrestler. The call stood, Black Knights were now down 29-39.
Bryson Starling and 10th grader, who is also a first year wrestler ended the match for the Black Knights at 220. Bryson was taken down, but fought off of his back two times in the first period. The North Surry wrestler chose bottom for the 2nd period and got a reversal and put Bryson on his back again, but Bryson fought off of it but got put back on it and was pinned, ending the first match for the Black Knights, 29-45.
The Black Knights took on Surry Central next. Since we started at 285 for the first match, this moved to the next weight, which was 106. Spencer Ader took the mat first for the Black Knights. Spencer was taken down straight to hi back and was pinned. Black Knights were down 0-6.
Gabe White was next at 113. Gabe was also taken down to his back and after fighting to try to get off of it, succumbed to the pin. The hole gets bigger for the Black Knights, 0-12.
Nick Jarvis was up next. Nick was in a back and forth match. Nick got a takedown and near fall, but gave up a reversal and near fall but had an unexpected call as the ref made a call to stop the action. Both coaches were surprised, I didn’t walk over to see what the call was, I thought it was an illegal hold, but the official had called them out of bounds by mistake. In the restart, Nick got an escape and another takedown as time expired in the 1st period. Nick was ahead 8-5. The Surry Central wrestler took bottom in the 2nd, Nick put him on his back, but he fought off but Nick was able to put him back and keep him there for the pin victory, cutting the deficit for the Black Knights, 6-12.
Dylan Robertson was up next. This was just not Dylan’s night, he was taken down and went to roll out and was caught on his back and unable to get away and lost by pin. The Black Knights were now down 6-18.
Seth Murdock was next and decided to do just like he did in his first match. Seth got a take down and near fall. He then put his counterpart from Surry Central on his back again for the pin. The Black Knights were coming back, 12-18.
Jeremy Hill was up next and still tired from his war of a first match. Jeremy got a takedown and near fall, but was unable to hold the Surry Central wrestler down and gave up an escape at the conclusion of the 1st period. Jeremy took neutral in the 2nd and got a takedown and then a pin victory. The score was now tied 18-18.
Jan Pabon was up next. Jan scored a takedown but gave up an escape. Jan got another takedown, but gave up another escape and then got taken down himself. Jan then got a reversal but gave up another escape as time expired in the 1st period. The score was 6-5 heading into the 2nd period, Jan got another takedown, then let the Surry Central wrestler go and got another takedown to close the period. In the 3rd period, Jan took neutral and got another takedown and near fall but let the Surry Central wrestler go, then took him down again, let him go and took thim down again. Jan finally got the pin fall. The Black Knights took the lead 24-18.
Jacob Lester was up next. Jacob got a takedown and pin, extending the lead for the Black Knights, 30-18.
Taylor Richardson was up next. Taylor got a takedown and then two different sets of near fall points to take a 8-0 lead into the 2nd period. Taylor took bottom and got a reversal and then secured the pin victory. The Black Knights now had a 36-18 lead.
Cody Tysinger was next, Cody got a takedown and then let his opponent up. Cody got another takedown and put his opponent on his back and got the pin. 42-18 was the lead for the Black Knights now.
Cody Downs was next. Cody got a takedown and two different near falls before securing the pin fall victory. The Black Knights lead stood 48-18.
Kameron Dozier was up next. Kameron was taken down and fought off of his back, but was unable to do so the next time he was put on his back, losing by pin. The Black Knights still had a 48-24 lead.
Bryson Starling was up next. Bryson got a takedown, but when they hit the mat, Bryson locked hands giving a point back to the Surry Central Wrestler. Bryson put him on his back but did not get the pin and gave up an escape. Bryson was ahead 5-2 heading into the 2nd period. Bryson got a takedown and pin for the Black Knights, pushing the lead to 54-24 with one match to go.
Nick Wimmer who started the first match for the Black Knights closed out the evening for the Black Knights. Nick again had a scoreless first period. Nick took bottom, and the Surry Central wrestler locked hands and then let Nick go, giving Nick a 2-0 lead. The Surry Central wrestler chose bottom in the 3rd and got an escape. In a scramble he got the takedown on Nick and Nick got caught on his back and was unable to get off of it, losing by pin. The Black Knights still got the victory, 54-30 to even our record at 1-1.

Saturday – Cross Face Classic Tournament
This was a special day for the Black Knight Wrestling team. Not only was it the first tournament of the year, but it was the first time anyone got to see the new Wrestling mat. Man what a sight it is, Black, Orange and a Knight in the middle of the mat. I can’t thank the NDAA enough for their help in purchasing this mat, as we had not had a new mat or anything since 1994. We were already missing one weight class and then had a young man not make weight which put us further in a hole for a chance to win the team championship. Teams that were coming for the event, Concord, East Wilkes, Thomasville, Green Hope, Leesville Road, Providence Grove and Charlotte Latin were all here and the action was about to start!
This being a small tournament to start the year, this was going to be as easy a day as possible for all teams involved to get the matches they were looking for. Now, this being early season, some teams were without some of their wrestlers, and it being Thanksgiving, that affected as well (That was the reason we were missing one). Weight classes had anywhere from 3-8 wrestlers in them.
The Quarter Finals were the first round. This saw some Black Knights take to the mat to start the day.
Spencer Ader was up first for the Black Knights in this round. Spencer was taken down and in trying to get back to his feet, found himself put on his back and pinned, which dropped him to the consolations.
Dylan Robertson was up next for the Black Knights and he also lost by pin fall, dropping him to the consolations as well.
Seth Murdock was up next and he scored a takedown quickly and then a pin fall to advance to the Semi-Finals and scoring the first points of the day for the Black Knights.
Jan Pabon was next for the Black Knights. Jan followed Seth’s lead and got a takedown and then a pin for more points for the Black Knights and a spot in the Semi-Finals.
Jacob Lester was up next, for the Black Knights. Jacob had a back and forth match which saw him come out on top with a decision victory, advancing to the Semi-Finals as well.
Taylor Richardson was up next and he followed his teammates impressive starts and scored a takedown and some near fall in the first period before securing a 2nd period pin and a spot in the Semi-Finals.
The next Black Knight to take the mat was Tyler Roumillat at the 195 weight class. Tyler was dominating his match and got caught on bottom and pinned, dropping him to the consolations and ending the winning streak we had going for the tournament. Tyler is a 12th grader, who is also a first year wrestler, so mistakes are going to happen due to his inexperience.
Nick Wimmer was next for the Black Knights and he continued to improve from Tuesday’s matches and scored a 1st period pin fall victory and a spot in the Semi-Finals.
We ran the Semi-Finals and First round Consolations at the same time in the tournament. IF we didn’t do this, we were going to have to take an unscheduled break that was going to be time consuming and we were trying to get everyone out at a decent hour for it being the first Saturday of competition. The Black Knights were gonna be busy as well in the Semi-Finals with only 3 of our 12 wrestlers losing in the Quarter Finals, so we would have 9 wrestlers taking the mat in this round.
We started with Gabe White at 113. Gabe set the tone early for the Semi-Finals for the Black Knights with a quick takedown and pin to reach the Finals in his first high school tournament.

The lead we had as a team had quickly evaporated as all of our wrestlers were eliminated that weren’t in the finals. We still had the lead, but Charlotte Latin had 5 in the Finals and 5 in the Consi-Finals. We would need to win all of the finals to have a chance to win the tournament and hope that Latin lost a few along the way.
Gabe White was up first and he took on a wrestler from Latin. Gabe got caught in a scramble and found himself on his back. He tried to fight off but was unable to get off of his back and lost by pin. Gabe finished 2nd in his first high school tournament.
Seth Murdock was up next for the Black Knights. Seth did what he had done all day long. He dominated. He got a takedown and near fall in the 1st period and finished with a pin in the 2nd period for his first Tournament Title!
Jan Pabon was up next for the Black Knights. Jan had another back and forth match. He secured a takedown in the 3rd period to secure his win, 5-2 and his first Tournament Title!
Taylor Richardson was up next. Taylor had a match much like Jan’s, it was back and forth, but in this match, only Taylor scored points and he walked away with a 4-0 win and his first Tournament Title!
Cody Tysinger was up next. Cody is no stranger to Tournament Finals. There were only three tournaments he did not wrestle in the Finals in last year and we go somewhere every single weekend until the end of February. Cody dominated his match. His opponent did not just lay down, after some rough wrestling which resulted in a penalty point against Cody, Cody took home a 8-1 decision victory and repeated as Cross Face Classic Champion as he won this tournament last year.
Cody Downs was up next for the Black Knights. Cody completely dominated his match. He was in complete control from Neitral and from top and from bottom. Cody secured a 9-3 decision victory and his first Tournament Title!
Nick Wimmer was next for the Black Knights in the 285 Finals. Nick was in another dog fight of a match. No score in the first period. Nick was down by 1 point in the 3rd period when he got caught in a scramble and found himself on his back and unable to get off of it. Nick finished 2nd place in his first high school tournament.
The Black Knights finished in 2nd place as a team at the end of the day. The Black Knights will be back in action on Wednesday night at North Iredell taking on North Iredell and Statesville. Next Saturday the Knights travel to West Wilkes High School for the Blackhawk Invitational, where the Black Knights finished in 3rd place last year and are looking to improve on that finish this year with a more solid lineup. We hope to see you soon at one of our matches!
