Men’s Basketball Preview

By: Jim Skotthy

With the beginning of the basketball season coming up next week, we take a look at the upcoming season. We posed 5 questions of Men’s Varsity Coach Kevin King. We thank Coach King for his responses, and wish him and the varsity Knights success this coming year!

Coach King,

Q: Who’s back this year, that you will rely on?

A: The only returning starter for this year is Charles Brunson. Charles is in his 3rd year on Varsity, and 2nd year as starting point guard. Point Guard is the most important position on the floor. He is the quarterback of our basketball team.

Q: What’s the difference between last year, and this year?

A: This years team is made up of a nucleus of guys that have played together for years, and have a good sense of what each other is doing. They genuinely like one another, and play together as a team.

Q: How do the Knights stack up against the rest of the Central Piedmont Conference?

A: The CPC will be strong again this year. Reagan returns the CPC player of the year, and several starters from a team that made it to the regionals (final eight) last year. Mount Tabor lost several starters from a regional finalist (final four), but has several new faces that are proven players. Davie County has four starters back and all four are NCAA Division I athletes. West Forsyth has the largest team in the conference and could go 6’7, 6’5, 6’5 on the back line. (EDITORS NOTE: West Forsyth lost their first game on Tuesday to High Point Andrews 48-43.) Reynolds also has good size, 6’8, 6’7, and several quick wings and guards back.

Q: Who is the difference maker, that is on the team this year ?

A: There are several new faces this year that should be able to contribute right away. All of the Juniors up from the JV team last year tasted success. Sophomore Brandon Easter played up the last 5-6 games last year, and Freshman Shy Tuttle both are expected to help out inside.

Q: Your thoughts on the team and conference?

A: I think in order for this team to be successful, we have to perform at a very high level. We do not have the margin for error that some teams in our league have. We have demonstrated an ability to shoot the ball well. We must eliminate needless turnovers, and we must develop a toughness on both offense and defense. Sharing the basketball and making the next pass on offense and on defense we have to be fighting on every possession and then rebounding the ball are the keys.

The Knights first game is Tuesday, November 29 at Ledford. The game will follow the varsity women. The first home game is the following night against East Davidson. Come out and support your Black Knights !
