A Great Thanksgiving Story

Mark and Layne Vaughan                                                                                                                                                                                         by: Tom Nazzaro

Everyone loves a feel good story. One of the most heartwarming stories over the past 5 years has to be The Blind Side. What a unique story that a very less than privileged young man, is taken in, loved, cared for, and subsequently, as a result of someone finally “being there” for this young man, he not only goes to college, but becomes an all pro left tackle in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens. Shortly after watching this movie, you reflect on the many wonderful aspects of this story. One that reigns in your mind is how wonderful the Tuohy family is for taking their time, money, and love to raise a young man from the depths of frightening uncertainty. You immediately think to yourself, are there really people that good, that generous, and that selfless. I’m proud to say that I know two people that embody this same attitude and mentality.

The name Mark Vaughan is synonymous around this community. If you were to ask students and/or co-workers at North Davidson High School or North Davidson Middle School what they think about Mark Vaughan, you might be there a while because this man is absolutely beloved. This is a man, who is not only a tremendous PE teacher, but an awesome coach. For the past 5 years, I have had the privilege to work along side Mark. In this time, I have seen the wonders of his work for kids, and his love, care, and compassion for kids, thus transforming them into very productive young adults. His impact on kids is absolutely immeasurable. He always takes his time to talk to kids about their lives, and his care is sincere, and heartfelt, and all kids know that, respect that, and learn by his tremendous example. Teaching aside, his talents in the challenging field of coaching have been remarkable as well. Sounds like a guy that has everything going for him, doesn’t it? What if I told you he’s such an awesome person, that he’s willing to put that all aside, because he’s received a unique calling? Well, if you’re like me, and you know this man, your first thought is how much you’re going to miss him, but then once he tells you why he’s giving all of this up, you understand, and you’re happy for his very unique opportunity.

As so often in life, we meet many people that talk a good game, but when it comes down to it, they don’t follow through with what they promised, for whatever reason. Mark, and his beautiful wife Layne, are definitely not these type of people. Their whole life revolves around impacting others, both in the community, and in the church. So many people, myself included, would be happy and satisfied with just that contribution alone, but Mark and Layne always yearn to do more, which leads me to the heart of this story.

About a month and a half ago, Mark comes into my office and tells me he’s received a unique and special opportunity. Through word of mouth from a couple of their numerous friends, they had heard about a Children’s Home in Clinton, South Carolina. The home is called Thornwell Children’s home. (http://www.thornwellhome.org/?p=1749) He then tells me that he and Layne are going to travel to Clinton that particular weekend and interview for a chance to mentor not one, not 2, not 3, but 8 teens, who need love, care, and stability. Basically, they’re going to live The Blind Side story, times 8!! Now, if you know Mark and Layne like I do, once that news hits you, you already chalk it up in your mind. You just know that once the Thornwell people meet Mark and Layne that they would fall in love with them, and subsequently ask them to join the Thornwell family; which is exactly what happened! The people in charge of the interviewing process, immediately offered Mark and Layne the opportunity to join the family. Not only did they hire them, but they also scrapped their no pets policy, because Mark and Layne said that if they couldn’t bring Annie and Tucker (their 2 dogs), then they could not accept, but they didn’t have to because the Thornwell people knew how special they were, and were absolutely willing to overlook their policy.

Now admittedly, once Mark told me it was official that they would indeed be taking this job, and leaving their life here in Davidson county behind, selfish feelings entered my body. I thought how much I’ll miss getting to work along side of him, laughing, joking, and sharing a friendship in which I am so lucky to have. Well, after that subsides, you’re happy for him, and are so envious of how wonderful and selfless Mark and Layne truly are. They are naturals for this job. These 8 kids need love, need someone to care without any strings attached, and more than anything else, need good role models that can finally give them the stability in life that we all should have an opportunity to have. These lucky 8 teenage kids all have potential, but with Mark and Layne by their side, they will find all of their hopes and dreams come true, because Mark and Layne will do whatever it takes to make sure that they have the best life they can possibly imagine. If I sound all to confident it’s because I’ve seen Mark and Layne so selflessly do this to other less-than fortunate kids around this community. Not only do they do wonderful things without any reservations, they are very good at loving kids, and have a unique ability to show how much they care.

Although Mark and Layne leaving is a source of sadness, if it’s one thing I’ve learned from my best friend, Mark Vaughan, is to be selfless, and not always put your own needs first. That is one of many indirect contributions Mark Vaughan has made for me in my life. Which is why I am happy for Mark and Layne, and happy for these 8 kids, because they have no idea their lives are about to get 110% better. So when you read this piece, feel sad that you won’t see these awesome people as much as you’re accustomed to, but then be happy for these 8 kids because Mark and Layne will see to it that there lives are set up for success.

Mark and Layne, special people…

In closing this story, I want to say how lucky I am to know these terrific people. By their influence, which is never judgmental or too preachy, they have always made me want to do more, and be a better person. Not only have they made me feel this way, but countless others, and are about to make, at least 8 others feel the exact same way. The Blind Side was a great movie, but in my opinion, it’s going to take a back seat in about 10-15 years when Hollywood gets wind of 2 more people that are the Blind Side representation times 8!! You will be missed Mark and Layne, but certainly not forgotten. Thanks for all your love, care, and compassion. Best wishes on your very exciting future!!
